001The Language of Limbo

As part of The Theatre Centre’s September 2024 Community Gathering & Reading, I read a new text titled The Language of Limbo. This text was written in response to Artistic Director Aislinn Rose’s prompt to invited artists: “Hope is an active agent, the opposite of despair.“

The gathering featured writings from PJ Prudat, Rimah Jabr, Justine Abigail Yu, Franco Boni, Adam Lazarus, Alanna Mitchell, Shanae Sodhi, Aislinn Rose, liza paul, Margaret Legere and Emily Jung.

This text is currently being expanded into a series of writings on the the state of the arts from my perspective as an artsworker working in Montréal and Toronto.

...The weight of the world increases day by day.

I’ve reached capacities and limits that continue
to trespass and deter from an image of self,
one that is tender,
filled with love,
an image that believes hope will prevail
in a time of despair,
of violence,
of silence.

Despair is a state of restraint,
one where colonial states ask you for:

application fees,
medical examinations,
reference letters,
English-language proficiency tests and
Powerpoints presentations

to prove to an immigration officer that your marriage
was indeed of love...
